    Pakistan Introduces Major Passport Reforms

The Government of Pakistan has approved a series of digital reforms aimed at modernizing the country’s passport system. The decisions were finalized during a high level meeting chaired by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

The new measures include the nationwide rollout of e-passports, online passport applications through the Pak ID platform, cashless payment facilities, and a passport home delivery service.

These changes are expected to make the passport application process faster, more secure, and more convenient for citizens both inside Pakistan and abroad.

What Are the New Passport Reforms?

The government plans to gradually replace traditional machine readable passports with modern e-passports.

According to officials, the move is intended to strengthen security, reduce fraud, and improve the overall travel experience for Pakistani citizens.

Why Is Pakistan Moving to E-Passports?

Traditional passports have limited security features and are more vulnerable to forgery and document fraud.

E-passports contain a secure NFC chip that stores biometric information, passport details, a digital photograph, and other encrypted data.

    Key benefits include:

    • Enhanced security against identity fraud
    • Faster immigration processing
    • Compatibility with international e-gates
    • Improved protection of personal information

Online Passport Applications to Move to Pak ID

Starting from July 1, passport applications will be integrated into NADRA’s Pak ID platform.

This means citizens will be able to apply for passports online without repeatedly visiting passport offices.

The Pak ID platform already handles identity related services, including CNIC and NICOP applications. The addition of passport services aims to create a unified digital system for citizens.

How to Apply for an E-Passport Through Pak ID

The online application process has been designed to be simple and user friendly.

Step 1: Download and Access Pak ID

Install the Pak ID mobile application and log in using your verified account.

    Step 2: Select Passport Services

Open the dashboard and choose the new “Passport Services” option.

Complete the online application form with accurate personal information.

    Step 3: Capture Biometrics

Applicants will be able to scan fingerprints and complete biometric verification using their smartphones.

    Step 4: Upload Required Documents

    Upload clear copies of:

    • CNIC
    • B-Form (if applicable)
    • Recent photograph meeting ICAO standards
    • Any additional supporting documents

    Step 5: Submit the Application

After reviewing all information, submit the application and save the tracking number for future status updates.

    Important Tip

Ensure all uploaded documents are clear and readable. Incomplete or poor quality documents may delay verification or result in rejection.

Cashless Payment System Coming to Passport Offices

Another major reform is the introduction of a fully cashless payment system across passport offices.

From July 1, applicants will no longer need to stand in long bank queues to deposit passport fees.

How Will the New Payment System Work?

Citizens will be able to pay passport fees using:

    • Debit cards
    • Credit cards
    • Mobile banking apps
    • Digital payment platforms
    • POS machines available at passport offices

The new system is expected to reduce processing delays and improve transparency.

    Premium Passport Services

The government has also approved changes for premium passport services.

Applicants requesting urgent or special services may be charged based on the actual cost of processing their applications.

Officials believe this approach will help improve service quality and speed for premium applicants.

    Passport Home Delivery Service

One of the most significant upcoming changes is the introduction of passport home delivery.

Authorities have confirmed that preparatory work for the service has already been completed.

    How Will Home Delivery Work?

Once a passport is printed and ready for dispatch, it will be delivered directly to the applicant’s registered address.

The service is expected to benefit:

    • Residents across Pakistan
    • Overseas Pakistanis
    • Senior citizens
    • Individuals living far from passport offices

This will eliminate the need to visit passport offices solely for passport collection.

New Business Passport Policy Under Review

The government is also working on a Business Passport Policy in consultation with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

The proposed policy is expected to provide additional facilitation for active taxpayers and business professionals who frequently travel internationally.

Officials are currently finalizing the framework before its formal launch.

Benefits of the New Passport System

The latest reforms are designed to provide several advantages for citizens.

    Benefits

    • Online passport applications through Pak ID
    • Secure biometric verification
    • Faster processing times
    • Cashless fee payments
    • Home delivery services
    • Improved fraud prevention
    • Better international travel compatibility
