Punjab government has declared a big initiative in agriculture for the modernization of agriculture and increasing the productivity of agriculture in the province. The new Green Tractor Program will allocate 20,000 tractors to eligible farmers in the coming financial year, giving them substantial financial support to boost the agriculture sector.
The initiative is a part of the Punjab Government’s efforts to assist the farmers by mechanization, affordable finance and access of modern agriculture technology. The Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz has asked authorities to speed up the ongoing reforms to enable farmers to cut down the expenses on farming and boost farm output.
Government Expands Green Tractor Program
The Green Tractor Program is being touted as one of the biggest support initiatives launched in terms of agriculture in the recent years in Punjab. The subsidy under the scheme would be Rs750,000 for the farmers for 50 to 65 horsepower tractors.
The subsidy’s purpose is to create an incentive for using a modern agricultural machine and to make it more affordable for small and medium farmers who would not have the funds to afford a tractor because of the increasing cost of equipment.
Farmers experts think that with the introduction of more mechanization, farmers can become more efficient in land working, irrigation, sowing and harvesting; and also diminish reliance on manual labour.
The move will not only help improve the productivity of agriculture but also boost the rural economy across the province, officials say.
Promoting Modern Farming Practices
The Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the main purpose of the move is to promote the use of modern farming practices in the province.
Farmers can use modern tractors and agricultural machinery to more efficiently and quickly carry out farming activities. Better machinery also means better crop management, bigger yields and reduced operating costs.
It is important to note that the modernization of agriculture is of paramount importance to the Punjab government as agriculture is one of the largest economic sectors and a source of jobs in the province.
Interest-Free Agricultural Loans Introduced
In addition to tractor subsidy scheme, Punjab government is also introducing province’s first interest-free agriculture loan scheme.
Through this, the farmers can take advantage of loan facilities for procurement of high technology agricultural machinery and advanced farming equipments up to Rs30 million.
The scheme aims to facilitate farmers to invest in modern technology which they might otherwise not be able to afford. The availability of sophisticated machinery should enhance the productivity, lower operating costs and competitiveness in agriculture markets.
With easier financing, officials hope to promote innovative ideas in farming and modernize its practices throughout the province of Punjab.
Affordable Equipment Rental for Small Farmers
The government is also working on a rental scheme for high-tech farming machinery to assist poor farmers who do not have the funds to buy the required equipment.
Under this scheme, farmers can have access to modern machinery on an affordable rental rate which would enable the small farmers to avail of mechanisation without having to bear the burden of its purchase.
The equipment rental program is likely to be particularly beneficial to rural areas, where access to modern agricultural equipment is still a challenge.
But Agriculture experts believe such schemes can boost productivity and cut down the burden on small farmers.
Focus on Sustainable Agriculture
The Punjab government is also actively working on sustainable farming practices by distributing modern farming equipment and machinery.
It is believed that mechanised agriculture can help optimise the use of resources, better manage soil and minimise the wastage during the cultivation and harvesting process.
The government’s agriculture reform plans also cover high-tech harvesters, Super Seeders and climate-smart farming techniques to ensure long-term sustainability of agriculture.
The distribution of 20,000 Green Tractors by the government of Punjab is a major step towards enhancing the province’s agricultural sector. The project also offers interest-free loans, cost-effective hire rates for agricultural machinery and assistance with advanced farming machinery to help boost productivity, reduce the cost of farm operations and boost rural livelihoods.
The government aims to modernize agriculture and increase access to modern machinery to establish a more efficient, sustainable, and competitive farming industry in Punjab.
