The Punjab Traffic Police has officially lifted the vehicle search against vehicles with OEM (factory-fitted) tinted glasses and this is a big relief to all motorists in Lahore and the province at large. This ruling comes after a very important revision in the Motor Vehicle Ordinance which defines whether fully-coloured windows installed by the manufacturer are legal.

The action is a response to the high number of complaints over the last few months by the general population with owners of many vehicles fined even though they had tinted glass which was within the law and installed by the factory. The recent clarification is now providing a consistent and legal enforcement to Punjab.

Crackdown on OEM Tinted Glass Halted

The police have verified that the automobiles whose window sides and rear windows are tinted by OEM are considered completely legal. DIG Traffic gave an unambiguous report to all traffic enforcement units, which said:

    • OEM tinted glass does not violate traffic laws
    • Traffic wardens must not issue challans for factory-fitted tint
    • Enforcement action should only target aftermarket or illegal tinting

The directive has been diffused throughout all the districts to avoid further misinterpretation of the law.

    What Is OEM Tinted Glass?

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) tinted glass is:

    • Installed at the factory during the car’s production
    • Uniform and embedded within the glass
    • Compliant with global safety and visibility standards
    • Designed to reduce heat and glare without affecting transparency

This is the reason why OEM tinting is fundamentally referred to as opposed to aftermarket tint films, which tend to breach the regulations of visibility and are regarded as illegal.

DIG Traffic Issues Clear Policy Guidelines

    According to the DIG Traffic:

    • Side and rear OEM tinted glass is permitted
    • No fines or FIRs should be issued over factory-installed tint
    • Strict action must continue against dark, reflective, or additional tint films

    Why the Crackdown Was Suspended

    The suspension comes after:

    • Numerous complaints from car owners
    • Instances where legally compliant vehicles were fined
    • Clarification within the Motor Vehicle Ordinance
    • Acknowledgement that previous enforcement drives targeted OEM tint incorrectly

OEM vs Aftermarket Tinted Glass – Key Differences

    FeatureOEM Tinted GlassAftermarket Tinted Glass
Installed byVehicle manufacturerOwner or third-party workshop
Legal StatusLegalIllegal if visibility limits are exceeded
EnforcementNo fines or casesStrict action continues
ComplianceMeets safety standardsOften violates visibility laws

What Remains Illegal Under Traffic Laws?

Even with the new policy, authorities continue to enforce strict action against:

    • Additional tint film applied over OEM glass
    • Dark aftermarket tints
    • Reflective or mirror tints
    • Any visibility obstruction beyond permitted limits

Violators will face fines, challans, and possible legal action

Punjab Traffic Police Advisory for Motorists

    Drivers have been advised to:

    • Ensure their vehicles only have factory-installed tint
    • Avoid applying any aftermarket tint films
    • Keep documents that show OEM specifications, especially for imported vehicles

Traffic Police clarified that compliance remains the owner’s responsibility.

    Impact on Vehicle Owners

This decision provides major relief for:

    • Owners of imported cars with manufacturer tint
    • Users of locally produced vehicles with OEM-tinted windows
    • Motorists wrongly fined under previous enforcement

The policy correction improves consistency in traffic regulation and boosts public confidence in law enforcement.

Aligned With Motor Vehicle Ordinance Amendments

The recent legal amendment clarifies that:

    • Laws target visibility obstruction, not factory specifications
    • OEM tint meets safety criteria and remains exempt
    • Traffic enforcement must be evidence-based and within legal boundaries

This brings Punjab’s traffic regulations closer to international standards.

    Public Response and Legal Clarity

Vehicle owners and legal experts have welcomed the decision, stating that:

    • OEM tinted glass is globally recognized as safe
    • It offers comfort without compromising visibility
    • The clarification eliminates confusion created by inconsistent enforcement

The lift on the crackdown on the vehicles having OEM tinted glass is a huge step to equality and legally correct traffic enforcement in Punjab. Although it is now obvious that tint installed by a factories is no longer subject to punishment, law enforcement still maintains that unlawful tinting of an aftermarket will still be dealt with mercilessly.

Drivers are advised to remain updated, go by the law, and do not do any unauthorized alterations that would make their travels hassle free in Punjab.
