The Islamabad Traffic Police has launched a paperless driving licence system in Islamabad, bringing the country a step closer to the digital age and making it easier for citizens. The initiative will make the process of acquiring a licence more convenient, quicker and efficient for the public.
The new system was officially launched by Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, who also inspected the new digital service counters and gave directives to ensure its proper implementation.
Entire Licence Process Now Digital
Official sources said that applicants used to have to provide a range of physical documents including:
- Medical forms
- Passport-size photographs
- Photocopies of identification documents
- Supporting paperwork for verification
The new digital process eliminates the need for citizens to bring original documents, photocopies or photos.
According to officials, the entire process, including medical examination and issuance of the licence, has been computerized.
Only CNIC Required
Authorities said that now, all citizens need to do is present their computerized national identity card (CNIC) to get their driving licence.
This will help save time, effort and make it more convenient for citizens visiting the licence centres.
Digital Fee Payment System Coming Soon
The Inspector General also announced the licence fee payment system will be digitised soon. This will allow citizens to make fee payments online without queuing up.
This next move is set to continue digitising the process in the city.
Public Convenience and Faster Services
The paperless move is part of efforts to digitise public services.
Expected benefits include:
- Faster application processing
- Reduced paperwork burden
- Better record management
- Improved transparency
- More convenient public service experience
Sindh Introduces Mandatory Driving Training
Meanwhile, earlier this year, the Government of Sindh has already made pre-licence driving training mandatory.
Syed Murad Ali Shah approved the move at a meeting.
The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2025, makes it compulsory for:
- Heavy Transport Vehicle (HTV) applicants
- Light Transport Vehicle (LTV) applicants
Authorities are only able to issue licenses following accredited training.
Growing Shift Toward Modern Licensing Systems
These changes demonstrate Pakistan’s government is embracing technology and higher standards to enhance public safety and services.
Islamabad is prioritising digital convenience, while Sindh is prioritising safe driving practices.
Conclusion
The introduction of a completely digital driving licence by the Islamabad Traffic Police is a big step forward for people. The fact that only a CNIC is required and electronic payment for fees is on the way makes applying for a driving licence quicker, easier and more efficient.
With other provinces also undertaking reforms, Pakistan’s transport and licence system seems to be heading in the right direction.
