Islamabad: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has declared significant changes in its Pak ID mobile application that enables Pakistani citizens to renew their Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) via the internet. Through this upgrade, the entire process of renewing one can now be done through the smartphones by the applicants themselves and they are also able to get their CNIC at the home address without visiting a NADRA office.

The project will be part of the wider digital transformation agenda of NADRA, which will enhance its delivery of public services, decrease the congestion levels across the registration centers, and increase the accessibility of the services to its citizens residing in distant locations and abroad.

    Online CNIC Renewal Service Details

The Pak ID app includes the online CNIC renewal service, which is currently functioning on mid-2025 and is accessible in the country and beyond.

    • Normal Service Fee: Rs 400
    • Urgent Service Fee: Rs 1,150
    • Executive Service Fee: Rs 2,150

All the applications are made online based on the Pak ID mobile app, and fees are paid online with the help of approved payment methods.

    Reason Behind the Digital Shift

In the past, the renewal of CNIC was done physically where citizens were required to visit the NADRA centers, fill out paperwork, and stand in long queues undergoing the biometric verification. The procedure was lengthy especially among elderly people, people in the rural regions and expatriates in Pakistan.

As more people started using smartphones and gaining access to the internet, NADRA switched to a mobile-based system to enable identity services to be more convenient, efficient, and safe. The officials indicate that the move also makes Pakistan congruent with the international best practices in e-governance.

New Features in the Updated Pak ID App

The newest implementation of the Pak ID app contains some improvements that are focused on streamlining the process of renewal:

    • Real-time tracking of CNIC applications
    • Biometric verification using facial recognition or fingerprints via mobile devices
    • Digital signature functionality
    • Direct photo and document upload
    • Secure online payments through debit/credit cards, Easypaisa, JazzCash, and e-Sahulat
    • Home delivery of renewed CNICs

These features eliminate the need for in-person visits and improve transparency throughout the process.

How to Renew CNIC Through the Pak ID App

The official Pak ID app can be downloaded on Google Play and Apple App Store; with the help of the application, the citizens are able to renew their CNIC. Once registered and undergone a biometric verification, the applicants are given the option to choose the CNIC renewal as well as input personal information, attach documents, and go through biometric verification, pay the fee, and track the status of the application until they are delivered.

Warning Against Fake Websites and Agents

Another possible fraud that NADRA has already warned people about is fake websites and unauthorized agents that provide CNIC services. Recently a rogue site was detected as a counterfeit to the NADRA and hence the authority has reported the issue to national levels on cybercrime.

To avoid fraud and abuse of data, citizens especially overseas Pakistani are suggested to use the official Pak ID mobile application and not to use third-party agents.

    Significance of the Update

According to the officials, the new system will lower travel prices, save time, boost service efficiency, and security of identities. It also allows Pakistans abroad to renew their CNICs without the services of agents and even without visiting Pakistan.

The latest Pak ID app based CNIC renewal facility will be a major jump towards digital governance in Pakistan. NADRA is looking to make the identity services in the country and beyond more accessible and faster and safer through the online approach of enabling the population to complete the entire process online and receive the service safely and conveniently at home. The citizens are urged to use the official platforms only in order to prevent scams and misinformation.
